Nutrition Education

Good Nutrition is Essential

"Even the simplest meal can be healthy and taste great. As a professional chef, I know that how I cook is as important as what I cook. Despite alarming obesity rates in the U.S., nutrition education is rarely found as part of the school curriculum. Helping children make healthy food choices is an essential ingredient for instilling good habits to last a lifetime. Chefs for Humanity is dedicated to helping teachers, parents, caregivers and teach good nutrition by involving kids in making healthy, nutritious snacks and meals."  -- Cat Cora

Let's Move Initiates Chefs Move to Schools Program

“We are going to need everyone’s time and talent to solve the childhood obesity epidemic and our Nation’s chefs have tremendous power as leaders on this issue because of their deep knowledge of food and nutrition and their standing in the community.”  -- First Lady Michelle Obama

Cat Cora, and chefs from across the country are answering Mrs. Obama's call to get involved with their local schools as part of the Chefs Move to Schools initiative, run through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The First Lady is calling on chefs to get involved by adopting a school and working with teachers, parents, school nutritionists and administrators to help educate children and show that nutrition can be fun.

Through this innovative program, local chefs are matched with schools in their area to incorporate new techniques and healthy recipes into school meals and show kids that eating right is delicious and fun.

The New Food Pyramid: MyPlate

USDA's new food icon, MyPlate, serves as a quick visual reminder to all consumers to make healthy food choices when you choose your next meal, built off of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for all Americans. MyPlate can help prioritize food choices by reminding us to make half of our plate fruits and vegetables and shows us the other important food groups for a well-balanced meal: whole grains, lean proteins, and low fat dairy.
